Turtle Mirror by Artist Joe Parker
I have been a finish carpenter for the last 20 years or so. Unfortunately the construction industry creates a lot of waste. I am personally appalled by the scale of such waste, so I try to do my part to minimize it. Over the years I have rescued a lot of building materials from the job site dumpsters and the accumulation has been especially interior trim. I have been friends with Koz for more than 30 years, so when he asked me if I could build frames for his art we thought it would be a great way to recycle some of the material that I have collected. Since then I have made hundreds of frames for him. Drawing has been a love of mine since childhood, so each time Koz would place an order for frames I would send him a whimsical frame with an aquatic theme, just for fun of course!! He was impressed and asked if I would like to sell them in his gallery. I jumped at the opportunity! Artistic creation is a relaxing release for me and provides a unique opportunity for me to combine the two things that I really enjoy, carpentry and drawing. Hopefully others will enjoy the results. With a steady stream of frame orders from Koz I have depleted my stock of rescued material, but I recently discovered a resale store that sells donated building materials. Some of the product is new, but most of it is used. The proceeds of their sales go to Habitat for Humanity! What a great way to both recycle and support a wonderful charity!
