Sugarloaf Bat Tower

An historical site in Monroe County, Florida is the Sugarloaf Key Bat Tower. Located at the 17 mile marker, one mile northwest of US 1 on Sugarloaf Key. It was built in 1929 by Richter Clyde Perky to control the mosquito problem that infested the Lower Keys with the use of bats. These bats were suppose to eat the mosquitoes that was causing the blight disease malaria. However, when the bats were released they supposedly flew off and never returned.
